Hoedspruit Streetlight Project

The chamber has been working on a streetlight project concept since the revitalisation of the organisation in 2022. One of the requests from attendees to the official launch was to take a look at infrastructure and especially streetlights. We are here to serve and very excited to announce that the project is underway.

Project planning started in 2023 and the process took a little longer than anticipated to get all the requests approved from the municipality and Eskom. In 2024 the municipality confirmed that all approvals were received and the plan could be discussed and the necessary assessments performed. The chamber met with the mayor, directors and councilor of Ward 1 (Hoedspruit) to discuss the phases and vision for this project. It was a very well received plan as it would coincide with the maintenance that the municipality has planned on some of the lights as well.

The community was invited to a public participation session whereby the project would have been presented and comments and/or objections to any of the plan taken into consideration. The meeting invitation was well circulated on whatsapp groups as well as Facebook and when the meeting date arrived, all but 4 people showed up. 1 Business owner, 2 ward committee members and 1 press representative. After consideration, the meeting was cancelled and the proposal was sent out via whatsapp groups to invite feedback. Emails received in support was overwhelming but there were a few worried residents who were concerned about light polution. That is not the goal of the project and the proposal was sent out to all who requested it to reiterate the goals and vision for town.

We will be keeping the community updated on the progress and project spend, to once again promote transparency.
